Arm is the company that powers all of our smartphones' processors. This includes Snapdragon, Exynos, Apple's chips, and tons of other devices that rely on the Arm architecture. And now Nvidia just agreed to buy it from SoftBank.

Nvidia is no doubt the world's biggest GPU manufacturer. So, them getting their hands on Arm could turn out to be a huge deal for us. Here is why!

Why Nvidia Buying Arm May be A Big Deal

First things first, the merger is expected to be finalized in about a year and a half or so. This means that it's probably going to take a while before we see the results of this whole deal coming to fruition.

Nvidia buys Arm

As for why this is a big deal, Nvidia is very widely known for its powerful gaming graphics cards. But, one thing that's a lesser-known fact is that they've also invested tons of funds on AI research.

Nvidia has contributed a lot to the world with its AI technologies in:

  • Energy soolutions
  • Finance
  • Game development
  • Healthcare
  • Industrial applications (AI self-driving cars and deep learning, airplane navigation systems, etc)
  • Media (CGI and renders)
  • Retail
  • Public sector

And now we're going to get all these years of research and development along with anything the future may bring into our phone devices. So, we expect to see a few insane improvements over the next few years.

Even now, whether we realize it or not, AI in smartphones plays a crucial part in our day to day lives. For example, Google's HDR+ feature is largely depended on a form of AI that can automatically tell what adjustments need to be made after combining several pictures together to make a much better result.

And as we've previously seen with Nvidia's DLSS, AI can also be used to massive increase computing performance while decreasing power consumption. So, god only knows what sort of new improvements and features we'll see once Nvidia takes the helm.

Wrapping Up

So, to wrap things up, the near future seems to hold many pleasant surprises for us. More AI tools and features, better performance per watt, and, according to Nvidia's founder, a new Internet of Things (IOT).

To put it word by word, " AI is the most powerful technology force of our time and has launched a new wave of computing. In the years ahead, trillions of computers running AI will create a new internet-of-things that is thousands of times larger than today’s internet-of-people. Our combination will create a company fabulously positioned for the age of AI!"
