CAUTION:  Improper rooting can permanently brick your phone. is not responsible for any data loss or possible damage. If you have any doubts, contact us on our forum.

Rooting your phone unlocks many features of the Android operating system that would otherwise remain dormant.

However, if you improperly root your phone, it can cause glitches, erratic behavior, and in some cases, can permanently damage your phone.  Be sure to only download and use the specific files recommended for your device.  Proceed with caution, and at your own risk.

Be forewarned, rooting your phone will void your phone’s warranty.  In the past, users could root and flash their phones at will in order to circumvent the voided warranty status, however, newer phones now implement flash counters to track your device’s root history.

Be careful what you wish for…

If supported, you can use Triangle Away to reset any flash counters, sort of like rolling back the odometer on an old car.  However, if your device uses Samsung Knox, rooting will automatically trigger the warranty void status, which cannot be reversed.  Think carefully before deciding to root your device–once that genie is out of the bottle, there may be no stuffing it back in again.

Speaking of genies, this may be a good time to be careful what you wish for!

If you have a device with encrypted storage, rooting will wipe all data, which can’t be recovered.  You’ll also want to make sure your device has an unlocked bootloader; if not, the rooting process could brick your phone, which is just a cute way of saying it’s dead to the world with little hope of bringing it back to life.  Typically, carrier branded phones like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, etc., all have locked bootloaders.

Rooting virgin? Read on…

If you’re new to rooting, you’re in luck, because has a comprehensive directory of Root Resource Links for Specific Samsung Devices listed at the end of this article. Just look up your make and model phone to find compatible ROMs, then follow the instructions listed below to root your device.

How to Root Your Phone Using ODIN: 9 Steps to Success

FYI the following root method is based on CF-Auto-Root by Chainfire.

The instructions provided here are general and applicable to all devices. If your phone has an XDA Forum discussion thread available, a link to that resource will be provided within the “Root Resource Links for Specific Samsung Devices” listed below.

Step 1: Find your device on the “Root Resource Links for Specific Samsung Devices” listed below.

Step 2: Prepare Your Files

  • Download CF-Auto-Root for your specific device and save the files to your PC.
  • Each archive should contain a version of ODIN3 and a CF-AUTO-ROOT file with a .TAR.MD5 extension.

Step 3: Drivers, get ready!

Download the SAMSUNG USB Drivers here and install them on your PC:

Step 4: Enable USB Debugging on your device.

Go to Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging, then Turn Off your device.

Step 5: Put your phone in Download Mode

The most common method is to press the Volume Down + Power + Home buttons all at the same time.  If this method doesn’t work, Google “(Your Device Name) + Download Mode.”

Step 6: Run ODIN, Run!

Run the ODIN3 software on your PC and connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable.

Step 7: Time to Root Your Phone

Within ODIN, click ‘PDA’ then select the CF-AUTO-ROOT .TAR.MD5 file that you downloaded in Step 2.

Step 8: No Turning Back Now!

Click Start to begin the procedure and root your phone.  Don’t touch your phone or the USB cable connected to your computer until the process is complete, or you could cause permanent damage.

Step 9: Recovery

Once the rooting process is complete, your phone should automatically enter Recovery Mode. If not, you’ll have to do it manually.  Google “(Your Device Name) + Recovery Mode” to find the key combination required to put your device into Recovery Mode.

If your device doesn’t boot into Recovery Mode and root, go back into Odin and make sure “Auto Reboot” is unchecked, then repeat the process.

Once complete, disconnect the phone’s battery momentarily, then put it back, and manually enter Recovery Mode by pressing Volume Up + Home + Power.

Now that you know the steps involved with rooting, there’s nothing left to do but dive in and get it done.  But if you have any lingering questions or need help along the way, just post in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to help.  And here’s that coveted resource list we’ve been telling you about:

even allow you to rent referrals to increase your earnings potential.

  19. At this time it seems like Drupal is the top blogging platform out there right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you’re using on your blog?

  20. Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Its like women and men don’t seem to be fascinated except it is one thing
to accomplish with Girl gaga! Your own stuffs outstanding.
Always take care of it up!

  23. Everything composed was actually very reasonable.
However, think on this, what if you added a little content?

I ain’t suggesting your information isn’t solid., but what if you added a title that grabbed people’s attention? I mean Step-by-Step: How to Root Your Device – Samsung
Update is a little boring. You ought to look
at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they create
news headlines to get people to click. You
might add a related video or a pic or two to grab people interested about what you’ve got to say.

In my opinion, it would make your blog a little livelier.
