There is a new app by developer Julian Klode that is worth to check out. This app uses the Android’s VPN system them same way alternative apps like AdGuard and NetGuard does, but it has a new twist that can save you battery life in the process

This app is unique in that it works at DNS levels. This means that it can only filter traffic for a short moment when the connections are first made. This is where the battery life saving come into play. This app is absolutely free and open source.

Install DNSS

Download the DNS66 that is available on F-Droid Repository. Head to Packages section and then hit the ‘download apk’ link. Tap Download complete notification to launch the APK file. When prompted, ‘hit’ install.

Select Domain Filters.

After launching the application, you will see a set-up guide. To start, go to Domain Filters tab. Pick one ad-blocking host file. The ‘Adaway hosting file’ is the most suitable file. After turning enabling the ad-blocking hosts file, the dot turns green.

Activate the VPN Service

Go back to the Start/Stop tab and hit the refresh icon at the top of the screen. You will then see a notification telling you that the host file is downloading. Wait till it I done and then long-press the power button at your screen’s center to activate VPN ad-blocking service. Hit OK at the pop-up.

From now on, the applications will be blocked in your apps. When the service is enabled, you will see what looks like a small key icon on the status bar.
