So your smartphone won’t charge smoothly? The first thing most people do is assume that the battery or charger has failed. But more often than not, the problem (and its solution) is much simpler than you think. The problem happens at varying degrees. Sometimes, the device won’t charge at all. Other times, it might barely charge. If your device won’t charge as well as it should (or used to), take a look at the following easy tips to fix it.

DIY USB Port Fix

The easiest, quickest way to fix a smartphone that won’t charge smooth is to do some little bit of repair on your USB port. The metallic surface inside the USB port usually fails to make proper contact. As opposed to a manufacturing defect, this usually happens after prolonged plugin and unplugging of the charging cable. What you need to do is remove your smartphone’s battery (i.e. if it is removable) and place something narrow such as a toothpick to lever-up the tiny tab inside your USB port. Make sure that you’re doing this very carefully so that you don’t mess things up. 90% of the time, this solution works.

Remove lint and dust

If you often place your device in your jeans pockets, then that might as well be the reason why it’s not charging as it should. The lint from your pocket can ‘clog’ the charging ports on your device. The same thing can happen when your device is placed in your pocket together with chocolate and sweets, or when it’s exposed to dust or other tiny particles. But all you need to do is use compressed air to blow out any offending foreign irritants.

Switch cables

If both the solutions highlighted above won’t work, it might be time to switch cables. The cable often is the cause of the problem, not the adapter. So try to get another cable and see whether it makes a difference for your device charging. If the new cable is working well with your device, then you’ll obviously know that the original one had a defect.

Maybe it’s the adapter now

If a new cable doesn't seem to make much of a difference, it’s time to suspect and investigate your adapter. Adapters that come with a removable charging cable often have problems. This is due to the rampant plugging and unplugging, loosening up the USB port. Try your cable and adapter combination to see whether they work on another device. If not, then that’s where your problem is. You can get a good, brand new cable at the cost of a few dollars.

Or the battery

Most smartphone manufacturers are doing their best to come up with durable batteries, but they don’t always succeed. So your battery might as well be the reason why your device won’t charge as it should. Some defective batteries will bulge or start leaking fluid, so it’s easy to notice. If all other solutions above don’t work, and you’re charging your device from the right wall outlet, go to a reputable repair shop and have them inspect it.Assuming your smartphone hasn’t dropped in water recently, or encountered some other form of obvious damage, then the fixes above should address the problem.
