Nobody likes to be interrupted by unsolicited phone calls while having dinner or doing something important at work. However, the internet is one massive interconnected mesh, and it’s increasingly possible to keep contact information private. The good news though is that you can use a caller ID Android application to filter out spam calls. Truecaller and Hiya happen to be the top two apps for this. Each of them lets you figure out the identity of callers and reclaim your privacy.

Hiya has been there for some time. In fact, some users used it back in 2011. The application helped clean address books. But the current version is quite different. It identifies unknown numbers and blocks spam calls before they get to your device. This way, you get a degree of protection from fraudsters. Even though this app isn’t as popular as Truecaller, it seems to do just great. Incoming SMS messages and calls are processed by the app and matched with entries in the company’s massive database. Based on the results, the application then decides whether or not the call should reach the end user. It’s very easy to blacklist specific numbers so as to stop SMS messages and calls from individuals from getting to you. You can also block based on categories. This way, telemarketers have no luck with you.

Using the app is fairly easy. Once you install it to your device, you just have to sign up with Facebook then verify your phone number and it’s all done. You’ll be delighted at how simple this app is to use. You get no ads with this app too.

This is the heavyweight when it comes to identifying caller ID and blocking Spam. Truecaller was first released way back in 2009. Truecaller doubles up as an effective dialer app for Android. It’s designed by a Swedish company named True Software Scandinavia AB. In addition to Android, Truecaller is also available for iPhones, Firefox OS, BlackBerry 10, Tizen, Windows Phone and multiple other platforms.

Truecaller has a massive user base spanning hundreds of millions. Since their data is crowdsourced, the app is able to match nearly any number to a name. The phone’s dialer tool also makes it superior when compared to Hiya. You’ll be able to block any unwanted SMS or calls, but also dial directly from the application. Searching for unknown numbers is super easy, you just have to type a name and the app will take care of the rest. You can network with other users on Truecaller, and this happens to be a real advantage.

Both Truecaller and Hiya are essential Android apps for blocking unwanted calls and SMS messages. It all boils down to your specific preferences.
