Google Maps has been the most successful and popular navigation app across all platforms, providing the most accurate routes and the coolest features for years. Despite covering almost all the key aspects of navigation, Google Maps does far short in displaying speed limits. Fortunately, Velociraptor is the ultimate app for adding speed limit indicator for Google Maps and enhance navigation.
Velociraptor is a third-party app which is available for free on the Google Play Store (download here). The app is basically a widget that displays the speed limit of your current location and also comes with a built-in speedometer which also displays the speed of your vehicle. So go ahead and follow this guide to add speed limit indicator for Google Maps with Velociraptor.
Once you have downloaded Velociraptor on your Android device, set it up before you can start using it as a speedometer. You also have to permit the app to “Draw Over Other Apps” from the Settings in order to enable overlay. If you are on Android Marshmallow, you will have to “Grant Permission” to Velociraptor so that it can use your location information.
Now that you have granted Velociraptor the necessary permissions, you will be able to view a speed limit sign and a circular speed dial on your screen. You will be able to see the Velociraptor overlay all the time, but you can choose to show or hide it in specified apps.
Displaying speed limit indicator for Google Maps
Since you’re probably using the Velociraptor app for Google Maps, it can be annoying to see the speed limit widget hover all the time. So before you use the speed limit indicator for Google Maps, head over to “Show/hide in specified apps” and enable it, which will redirect you to the Accessibility Settings.
In the Accessibility option, tap on Velociraptor to enable it, and head over to “Configure” to see that Google Maps is the only app on your device for which the overlay is enabled.
You can also use the Velociraptor settings to tweak with options like enabling International style, displaying km/h instead of mph/h and vice-versa.
Now that you have configured Velociraptor to work only with Google Maps, open up the app on Android and enjoy a complete navigation experience.
