The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge run on two versions of chipset: Snapdragon and Exynos. While Snapdragon is built by Qualcomm, Exynos is created by Samsung. There are very few practical differences between these two chipsets. For one, the Exynos chipset is easily rooted while the Snapdragon one is not. In the US, all of Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge phones run on Snapdragon processors, which means that most users are out of luck when it comes to rooting. The good news though is that Chainfire released a convenient root method for Snapdragon models a while ago. Below are steps you should take to root your Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge.

Please note

  • Keep in mind that this procedure will erase your device. Thus, you should backup everything you consider important.
  • You’ll need a Windows PC to get this accomplished.
  • While this rooting process will give you root access, it won’t allow you to flash custom ROMS. Any attempt to flash a custom recovery might end up hurting your phone.
  • Disable secure boot in Settings>Lock Screen

Step 1 – Setup ADB and USB Drivers

  • Download Samsung drivers here and install them.
  • Navigate to Settings>About Phone then tap on the build number consecutively till you have enabled developer mode.
  • From Developer Options, enable USB Debugging.
  • Plug your device in via USB then set up ADB. Installing ADB should be an easy process and takes no more than 30 seconds.

Step 2 – Flash rooted boot image using Odin

  • Download Odin here and save it on your Windows PC.
  • Download the particular rooted boot image for your specific smartphone model below and then save it to your Windows PC.
Galaxy S7 VersionsGalaxy S7 Edge VersionsNote: you will get a .tar file, keep it that way and don’t extract it.
  • Extract Odin then open it.
  • Turn your device off then turn it back on by pressing the Volume Down, Home and Power buttons simultaneously till you get the Download mode.
  • Click on AP then select the .tar file that you downloaded for your device.
  • Click Start then wait for your device to flash and reboot.

Step 3 – install SuperSU

  • Download SuperSU installer then save it on your Windows PC.
  • Once it downloads, extract it.
  • With your device still plugged in, double-click the root.bat file then wait for it to flash your handset.
  • Once that’s done, launch SuperSU on your Galaxy smartphone and IGNORE the option to update the binaries. Otherwise, you might hurt your phone.
At this stage, you should be ready to go. Your phone should be rooted and ready to work with super user privileges. You might want to tweak it a little bit for a more customized look. To learn more about rooting your Android device, click here.
