At Samsung's Analyst Day presentation in February, Samsung indicated they are planning for a device with a flexible, folding display to be available in 2015 to  2016.  Now, a Korean publication is claiming that Samsung will release a tablet type device in early 2015 with a folding, 8" to 9" , full HD Super AMOLED display. While clearly in the rumor category, the publication claims the display will be built on a plastic substrate, rather than glass, and can withstand being folded and unfolded thousands of times without loss of quality. It is said to be foldable into thirds, similar to what is shown at the 2:12 minute mark of the video linked below.Samsung first showed it's ability to make curved, though not really flexible, screens with the rather poorly received Galaxy Round smartphone. And they've shown a prototype of a phone with a curved screen that wraps around the edge of the phone, allowing notifications to be displayed even if the main part of the screen is protected by a flip cover. And at the Consumer Electronics Show, in January, Samsung showed a TV with a flexible screen which can shift from flat to curved, but with only a limited degree of curvature.samsung-curved-displayIf this rumor is true, it will be a dramatic advance in display technology that has the potential to dramatically change both the design of our devices and the way we use them. Only time will tell if this rumor has any merit, but Samsung seems to be leading the way on pushing the bounds of display technology. Whether next year, or the year after, exciting new products are coming! The video presentation Samsung showed at the Analyst Day is well worth watching for a look at what the future may bring.
