Instagram has just received a full blown icon makeover on both its applications on Android and iOS. Though the icon still resembles the previous brown Polaroid-esque Instagram representation, as still being a camera, the new icon has been simplified and with the addition of bright rainbow-themed colors. Aside from featuring a new colorful icon, the photo-sharing app has also been updated with a refreshed layout with a black and white design.

It appears that the UI tweaks are entirely cosmetic, as the update didn’t introduce any new features or filter, navigation remains unchanged throughout the app and its tools and buttons are still where they once were. The only new difference is instead of the traditional blue and black color scheme that previously represented menus on Instagram, we now have a white plain background, with texts and buttons that are black.

According to Ian Splatter, the Head of Design at Instragram, the whiter interface was introduced to enhance the look of the users’ content such as videos and photos, without the distraction of the surfaces’ color and noise.

Apparently, Instagram won’t be the only app getting a refreshed look, its other apps such as Boomerang, Hyperlapse and Layout are also receiving a similar treatment.

Whether this new Instagram look update is a good or bad thing, is still something debatable as it continues to cause with mixed feelings among the app’s fans. What are your thoughts on the new look? Is it forgettable or a classic? Let us know in the comments below.
