Game of Thrones game for Android by Telltale Games
There’s no better argument over the fact that point-and-click adventure games offer an immersive form of storytelling that not even feature films can accomplish. Telltale Games is among the very few who have mastered the art of such gameplays and brought gems like The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead to gaming machines across all platforms.
After creating a phenomenal support for its story-telling style games, the young game developer studio is rising up with the official Game of Thrones game. As the penultimate season 7 approaches, playing the official GoT game on Android seems quite fitting. The six-episode series from Telltale takes you to the mythical land of Westeros where life isn’t fair and the consequences of every action come back to haunt you.
Before you proceed: If you have never seen the Game of Thrones TV show or read any of the books by George R. R. Martin, the game is not the best way to familiarize yourself with the franchise. Game of Thrones game is an adaptation of the TV show and most of the storyline revolves around the fallout from the events that took place on the screen. You’re better off catching up with the series before you take the game for a spin to get the best gameplay experience.
The adaptation takes into focus the lives of members that belong to House Forrester, which is a minor noble family of the North. For thousands of years, House Forrester has remained true and loyal to House Stark of Winterfell, but the events following the Red Wedding has changed their lives forever.
With the Warden of the North usurped by the defiant and treacherous House Bolton, House Stark seems to have fallen and their bannermen are in disarray over what comes next. In this perilous time, House Forrester can either drop to their knees and hand over the North to the unlawful Bolton or rise in rebellion at the risk of losing everything they hold dear.
Similar to the storytelling style in the books and TV shows, the game switches between three characters that you control – Gared Tuttle, the squire to Lord Forrester who is loyal to the cause, Ethan Forrester who is determined to step up and rule Forrester seat of Ironrath in the absence of his father, and Mira Forrester, the oldest Forrester daughter who is also serving as a handmaiden to the future Queen Margaery Tyrell in King’s Landing.
Telltale Games is known for its iconic text story adventure where you are the master of your fate and what direction the story takes. While the concept may be decades old, Premium quality artwork, professional voice actors, and 3D graphics that qualify it as a modern game will make you fall in love with it.
Albeit most of the game involves step-by-step conversations, interacting with characters and decision-making, there are moments of immersive gaming as well. From certain moments where you need to tap to punch a character or swipe to dodge, the Game of Thrones game sure starts to feel like more than just an interactive novel.
Rather than physical effort, the game pits your mind against the characteristics of the storyline. It might seem simple to just choose between two decisions, but one misstep could change the outcome of the entire game. Being the squire to Lord Forrester, you’ll enjoy most of the thrilling action with Gared’s character, while Ethan and Mira Forrester are focused on making the right decisions and having conversations.
Should you buy it?
While you can get the Game of Thrones game by Telltale for free along with the first episode, you will have to cough up around $5 each for the rest of the 5 episodes. For every true fan of the TV show or the books that want to relive the experience from a never-before perspective, getting this game is a no-brainer.
From the iconic cut-scenes, veteran voice actors, special appearances by actors from the TV series and a titillating gameplay, there very little that you don’t take away from the entire experience. If you just can’t stay away from the wretched world of Westeros and all its characters anymore, this game from Telltale might just be the thing for you.
Game of Thrones game by Disruptor Beam
If you thought that the storytelling rendition of your favorite characters was awesome, wait till you get a scoop of this free strategy RPG based on the hit TV show and books by George R. R. Martin. Qualifying as yet another addictive freemium game for Android, Game of Thrones Ascent is all about the hunger for dominance and control over the lands of Westeros.
Instead of a vague depiction of what the GoT universe would be, the developers seem to know more about the story and its characters than most would. This leads to intriguing storylines that are combined with a strategic gameplay where every choice you make can either bring you fame and glory or lead to dire consequences.
While you don’t get to play as your favorite bastard Jon Snow or the drunken genius Tyrion Lannister, you get to swear allegiance to a Great House of Westeros and fight for their cause. You won’t be seeing even a scene of actual battle in the game, although you are in control of directing your sworn swords to fight in your name.
Developed like a true RGP, Game of Thrones Ascent has a well-constructed user interface, so make sure you read the guide at every step to learn the ropes. Being a story-based game, you will eventually achieve a higher status, recruit and train your sworn swords, befriend influential noblemen and strengthen your dominion over the land.
While the “free” aspect of the game will definitely pull you in, it won’t take you too long to realize why it is free in the first place. Packed with dozens in-app purchases at every step, the waiting time for almost every action in the game is the biggest negative aspect of it. In our opinion, users would’ve rather been okay with paying a decent price for this masterpiece upfront.
