Samsung recently unveiled its latest flagships the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy S7 Edge at the MWC 2016. These two flagship resonate improvements from their predecessors and so far they have been exceptional. With this in mind, how do the two great handsets stack up against one another.
Design Comparison
In terms of design, both smartphones seem to have a quite a number of similarities, the most obvious being their metal construction, with both devices also boasting a Gorilla Glass 4 protection at the back and front. The buttons and sensors are pretty much the same, and both devices feature water resistance capabilities along with microSD card support.However, the two significant differences are in the size and display. The Galaxy S7 has a flat 5.1-inch display, while the curved display found on the Galaxy S7 Edge stands at 5.5-inches. Though, the Galaxy S7 Edge is a much larger handset, it doesn't feel that different to the Galaxy S7 when you hold it.
Display Comparison
Both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge come with a QHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,960 pixels backed by a Super AMOLED panel, with minimal differences in the viewing aspects such as in brightness and saturation.A major difference is in terms of function. While the Galaxy S7 display is a typical responsive touchscreen display, the curved Galaxy S7 Edge screen only means added functionality.The sloping sides on the Galaxy S7 Edge serve as the edge display which provides shortcuts to launch your favorite apps and contacts, display notifications, weather information, news and more. Samsung has added enhancements to the Edge screen display, now allowing users to expand it into two columns, to store up even more information.Focusing on the displays, the S7 Edge may be more superior thanks to its added functionality and larger size which generally means better viewing of media content, reading and even typing. Despite of this advantage, the one downside of the curved display edges is that it tends to reflect more light during viewing, which can be annoying.
Software Comparison
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 both come running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, topped with Samsung's TouchWiz UI. Generally, the interface doesn't look that much different from the former TouchWiz build based on the Lollipop software, apart from the function improvements found on the Galaxy S7 Edge's edge display.Despite the extra functions on the edge display, the latest TouchWiz version offers a wide range of pre-installed apps, with the S7 software being the same on both smartphones.
Battery Comparison
The battery capacity is one of the major differences between the devices. The Galaxy S7 is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery, whereas the Galaxy S7 Edge houses a 3,600 mAh battery.The extra battery capacity may not be equivalent to a longer battery life, though the added battey percentage should be adequate for the relatively larger Galaxy S7 Edge display.
Camera Comparison
The camera technology is similar on both the S7 and the S7 Edge. Some of their upgrades include better capability in low-lit conditions, and dual-pixel technology which means even more accuracy.Both handsets boast a 12 MP primary camera sensor and 5 MP front shooter, each with aperture lens of f/1.7. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ is known as one of the Android smartphones with the best cameras, so its likely the Galaxy S7 series will be even better.
Performance Comparison
The internals of the devices are exactly the same, with 4 GB of RAM and a processor of either Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890.
